Wanderlust: Finding Secret Destinations

I have a major case of wanderlust and am fortunate to get to enjoy so many incredible travel experiences. I look forward to sharing my On The Glow travel guides to finding secret destinations throughout all of your journeys near and far. My husband and I love to travel and are always on the go. We are intrigued by unique cultures and seeing magical lands. Exploring and finding secret destinations is our thing. Our wanderlust takes us around the world and we love being able to share our journey.

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

The most important tip I can give is to always do your research before your journey, create a well planned itinerary and then throw all that information out the window when you get there! My first trip to Paris ended in a desperate longing to go back because I missed the Louvre museum.  It was closed on our last day there. What a bummer!  I so wished we would have planned the days better (but have no fear, I made it back to Paris and made sure I got to the Louvre)!

Keep your itinerary fluid and ever-changing. It’s not a waste to have one as it will guide you but stay flexible. Your journey will unfold in many exciting and surprising ways when you don’t plan every single minute.

It’s really easy to follow the advice of other tourists. Getting caught in those dreaded tourist traps leaves you feeling well, a little lackluster and less than enthused about the city you’ve traveled a long way to experience. Doing what every one else is doing when you are in a new city is totally normal…after all, you only have the online reviews and guides to tell you where to go. It’s a pretty easy trap to get caught in. Don’t get me wrong, I still read trip advisor reviews and Rick Steves‘ guide books (he is the man!) but I also strive to find the beauty in a city by just stumbling upon a mystical spot that transports me away from tourists and from myself. To me that is the epitome of a vacation…a get away!

Bike as much as possible and take public transportation. Talk to locals and start to explore! Ask the locals for their recommendations and favorite places, stumble upon a hidden restaurant that looks packed (without the tourists), and just let yourself go and wander!

I look forward sharing my travel experiences and the secret destinations we come upon with you all!  Keep up your wanderlust! Bon Voyage!
